Our Values

The school believes students learn best when they feel safe, valued and happy. Our staff is committed to providing an environment that nurtures personal growth and self-esteem. All members of the school community have rights and responsibilities and these are best ensured when agreed procedures are accepted and followed. The school and its community share the responsibility to assist students in learning appropriate behaviours in order to ensure an interactive communication with one another. A Value is a principle that guides our thinking and our behaviour. At SSGS, every individual is valued for who they are and what they contribute to the school.

Through the Values we aim to:
  • Improve behaviour, conduct and self-confidence by developing strong values within the students at the school.
  • Develop students understanding of what values are and why they are important in life.
  • Encourage children to ‘live the values’ in all aspects of their lives both in school/out and encourage parents to support the programme at home.
  • Display our school values and encourage all visitors to take account of them in their time in the school.
  • Enable children to focus upon the positive aspects of themselves that they can value, thereby reminding them of their individual worth, their worth in the school and wider communities and the worth of those communities themselves.

At SSGS, we believe that Value Education has a crucial role in education because it plays a part in raising achievement and it encourages students to be emotionally intelligent, articulate learners.

Here is the list of the key values that we at SSGS intend to cultivate and follow, such that they can forms the basis for the social, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and moral development of the child.

Respect

'Respect each other and our environ-ment'. Respect involves taking response-bility for each other. Respect is speaking to and interacting with others in a courteous manner. It is about being honest, reliable and trustworthy. This value is at the core of everything we do in school. It underpins learning through behaviour and one’s attitude towards people and the world around them. We want our whole school community to respect each other. One of the most important things you can teach your child is respect. The best way to teach respect is to show respect. When a child experiences respect, they know what it feels like and begin to understand how important it is.

Responsibility

This means the obligation to behave well, having a duty to fulfil. In school this may be shown as: making good decisions about our own behaviour, taking responsibility for our learning, being independent, bringing the correct equipment and handing homework in on time, caring for others. Responsibility also includes thinking about being a good citizen and caring for our environment.

Kindness & Empathy

Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. Kindness means that you treat everyone the best that you can. No matter who they are or how you feel about them you treat them with fairness and respect. We might think of nice things to do and say all day but when we act, that is kindness. To begin with, helping your mother fold clothes or washing up could also be an act of kindness.

Empathy means trying to understand other people's views or feelings and being supportive and caring towards them. It is the ability to understand another person’s perspective or circumstance whether you agree with this person or not. Empathy is a useful skill to develop in children.

Integrity

The fundamentals of integrity are: Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Trustworthiness and Honesty. A child can demonstrate integrity when they uphold honesty and differentiate between what is right and wrong. Integrity means following your moral convictions and doing the right thing in all circumstances, even if no one is watching. A person with integrity is truthful, honest, caring and genuine, dependable and worthy of trust and respect.

Determination & Courage

Determination means – not giving up when things get difficult. Determination is being able to do or achieve something. It is about making your mind up about something and driving on to achieve a goal.

‘Courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to overcome that fear.’
Honesty

Honest people: tell the truth despite consequences, voice their opinions in a kind, thoughtful way. Honest people will state their opinions even when their beliefs are against the majority.

“Honesty is the best policy. If I lose mine honour, I lose myself.”

William Shakespeare.

“To make your children capable of honesty is the beginning of education.”

John Ruskin

‘To be honest with others, you must first be honest with yourself.’
